Cabinet Painting & Refinishing in Roswell, GA

Solid oak and oak-veneer cabinets from the 1980s and early 90s are common in Roswell kitchens in Horseshoe Bend, Highland Colony and Holcombs Crossing, and their sound boxes make them good candidates for paint. Getting a finish that lasts depends on removing years of cooking grease and deciding whether the open grain gets filled. In Martin's Landing some doors were already brushed once, and we check that coat before anything goes over it.

Cabinet Painting & Refinishing for Roswell homes

Roswell's population multiplied between 1970 and 2000, and the housing records that growth. Martin's Landing and Brookfield Country Club date mostly to the late 1970s; Horseshoe Bend, Saddle Creek, Loch Highland and Wildwood Springs filled in through the 1980s; Barrington Farms and Edenwilde followed in the 1990s. Much of that stock is wood-sided or wood-trimmed, with cedar, hardboard and brick fronts, and the rolling ground that falls toward the river and the creeks gives many lots a slope and a walk-out basement. Older still is the historic district: the Mill Village around Sloan Street, where some millworker housing dates to the 1850s, and the blocks along Canton Street and Mimosa Boulevard, with old wood, plaster and many layers of earlier paint. Newer infill townhomes, such as Harlow and Ashbury, are the exception rather than the rule. For painting and remodeling that adds up to a lot of carpentry before paint, decks and siding at replacement age, and kitchens and baths on their first or second remodel.

Cabinet Painting & Refinishing on Roswell houses

A lot of Roswell kitchens still have their original 1980s or early-90s cabinets: solid oak or oak-veneer doors in a honey or orange stain, common in Horseshoe Bend, Highland Colony and Holcombs Crossing. Oak is a good candidate for paint because the boxes are usually sound, but its open grain shows through a smooth finish unless it is filled first. Thirty-plus years of cooking also leaves a film of grease on the doors around the range and the handles, and that residue has to come off completely. In older Martin's Landing kitchens the doors may already have been painted once, often by brush, and that earlier coat has to be judged before another one goes over it.

What usually gets missed

Oak grain and old grease ruin more painted cabinet jobs here than anything else. Skip the degreasing and the primer lets go around the pulls within months. Skip the grain filler and the finished doors show every pore under kitchen lighting. We also check whether a previous owner brushed the cabinets with wall paint, because that soft coat has to be stripped, not sealed over, or the new finish will peel with it.

On a Roswell job we check

  • Degrease every door and face frame before sanding
  • Decide on grain filling for oak before the first primer coat
  • Strip any earlier wall-paint coat instead of sealing over it

What the job actually involves

Cabinets get touched, splashed and scrubbed every day, so the finish has to be hard and well bonded. That comes from degreasing, scuff-sanding and the right primer, not from a coat of wall paint.

We use a bonding primer and a hard-curing cabinet enamel rather than wall paint, because cabinets take constant handling and moisture, and ordinary paint stays soft and scuffs.

How we run a cabinet painting & refinishing job in Roswell

  1. 1

Label and remove doors and hardware

Doors, drawer fronts and hinges are taken off and numbered so everything returns to its original spot. Hardware is bagged. Drawer boxes and cabinet frames stay in the house and get masked.

  2. 2

    Degrease and deep clean

Years of cooking residue sit on cabinet faces, especially near the stove. We clean with a degreaser, then rinse. Paint over grease will peel off in sheets, so this step is not skipped.

  3. 3

    Repair, sand and fill

Dings, old hardware holes and gouges are filled. All surfaces are sanded to dull the existing finish. Open-grain wood such as oak may get grain filler if you want a smooth look, otherwise the grain will show through.

  4. 4

    Prime with a bonding primer

A stain-blocking bonding primer goes on to seal tannins and grip old finishes. Dark or stained cabinets can bleed through, which is why primer matters.

  5. 5

Sand lightly and apply finish coats

We scuff the primer, then apply two coats of a hard cabinet enamel by spray or fine roller and brush, with drying time between coats. Humid weather slows this down and can leave a soft film, so we manage airflow and timing.

  6. 6

    Cure, reinstall and adjust

Doors are rehung after the finish has dried enough to handle, and hinges and doors are adjusted so they close squarely. New or original hardware goes back on. The paint keeps hardening for days to weeks, so go gently at first.

What moves the price

We will not quote Roswell blind over the phone — these are the things we look at on site that decide the number.

  • Number of doors and drawer fronts, which drives most of the labor.
  • Condition and material. Water-damaged, peeling or heavily worn cabinets need repair.
  • Wood species and grain. Oak and similar open-grain wood takes extra work to look smooth.
  • Whether we paint cabinet interiors and the end panels and toe kicks.
  • Color change. Dark to light usually needs more primer and coats.
  • Whether doors are sprayed off-site or in a controlled space versus painted in place.

Cabinet Painting & Refinishing in Roswell — questions we get asked

How long are my kitchen cabinets out of commission?
Plan on about a week for a typical kitchen, sometimes a bit more. Doors may be gone for several days while they are painted and dry. You can still use the kitchen sink and appliances, but the cabinets themselves are partly unusable.
Will the paint chip?
Any painted surface can chip, especially at edges and around handles. Proper cleaning, sanding and primer, plus a hard enamel, cut that risk a lot. The finish continues to cure for weeks, so be gentle at first.
Can you paint cabinets that are already painted or stained?
Yes. Both are fine with proper prep. Laminate and thermofoil are trickier and we will tell you honestly if yours is a poor candidate.
Is painting cheaper than replacing cabinets?
Usually, if the boxes are solid and the layout works for you. If the cabinets are damaged, sagging or badly designed, replacing them may be the better move.
Is there a smell?
Some, during painting and for a day or so after. We use low-odor products where we can and recommend ventilation.
